Nurses are the professionals who educate us about health risks and maintaining good health. Often times they are the ones to diagnose and treat us when we are ill. They work with newly born children to make sure that they develop correctly in the first years of life, as well as the elderly to make sure that they are comfortable during the last years of their lives.

  • Online RN to BSN Programs
These programs are made for nurses who have already established their career as a registered nurse. RNs that are ready to expand their opportunities for jobs, their knowledge of nursing practices, and their competitiveness as an employee seek BSN programs. The majority of nurses earn their BSN through an RN to BSN program. Many employers are moving towards requiring their nurses to have a BSN, but there are many reasons that nurses may choose to upgrade their degree on their own. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing lists their support for RNs that seek their BSN. They also list the reasons that RNs may choose to obtain a BSN, including professional development, desire to pursue advanced education or positions, and greater career mobility. Just over a quarter of nurses mentioned the higher salary as a direct reason for pursuing a BSN.

  • Online Nursing Administration Programs
These degrees are for nurses that want to take their career to the next level, to learn about the nitty gritty ins-and-outs of the nursing business. Nursing administration is for professionals who can see the bigger picture, and are ready to get an advanced education to take on managerial responsibilities such as directing and supervising staff, developing organizational procedures, and the other behind-the-scenes work of their industry. Before pursuing an online degree in nursing administration, nurses must already be an experienced, practicing RN. An additional certification to authenticate a nurse’s executive skills is also required after getting your degree. On average, nursing administrators are on the higher end of nursing pay. According to the DOL, they make about $94,000 each year. That number is liable to vary between professionals, depending on the scope of the facility and the nurse’s responsibilities.

  • Online Nurse Practitioner Programs
Online NP programs are for nurses who are ready to take their career to the next level, to get a comprehensive understanding of health that allows them to provide more clients with a higher quality of treatment. NPs are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, similar to nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives, meaning they require a higher level of education in order to validate advanced clinical skills and practice. RNs who are interested in prescribing medications and therapies, training patients and their family members in health management, as well as analyzing and interpreting medical data, may want to consider becoming an APRN. Online NP programs allow RNs to steer their education toward a career focused in pediatrics, geriatrics, families, or other specializations in which they may choose to become certified.

  • Online MSN Programs
Online MSN degrees allow RN/BSNs to continue to educate themselves at their own convenience. Many nurses who are pursuing their MSN degree have already established a career, and may be at the point in their life where they are raising a family or have other obligations. Online MSN programs can cater very well to these aspiring professionals, providing them with the options to advance their career around their existing lifestyle. An MSN can prepare nurses for careers as nursing administrators, nursing practitioners, nursing midwives, case managers, nursing informatics, and many more. For passionate nurses who want to become more competitive in the industry, an MSN may be the opportunity gain a deeper understanding of nursing practices and/or specialize your career.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE?

All of these types of programs can vary greatly in the ways that they prepare nurses to take on their professional roles. Careers in nursing can be very adaptable, so nurses often have unique strengths and goals that they bring into their professional perspective.

RNs who wish to succeed while advancing their nursing careers online must be ready to communicate with a wide range of individuals in diverse settings. They must be self-motivated and driven by their compassion for others and ready to learn about all the various aspects of nursing on a deeper level.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR?

The AACN has an accrediting board that standardizes programs to cover the most vital information and provide nursing students with a quality education. When choosing to advance their career in any direction, nurses should always pay close attention to the authenticity of their program by validating the accreditation.

Every profession in the nursing field requires nurses to demonstrate their qualifications through licensures and certifications. Various positions will have different requirements, so developing nurses should choose a program that will best prepare them for the certification exams that they will need to take after graduation.
