School Details
The University of Maryland Global Campus is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMGC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMGC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMGC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920s.
The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland. In 2019, the school changed the division name to the University of Maryland Global Campus to reflect the availability of its programs worldwide to serve members of the US Armed Forces, the State Department, NGOs, and other global learners.
The UMGC offers associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats. UMGC online degrees build real-world skills that can be put to use right away. These online programs provide a foundation upon which all future learning is built.
