Career Guide: Online Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship

Do you have a unique business idea that you’re certain would be a success? Do you want a career with no boss, all while working on your own terms? Perhaps you want to help hard-working small businesses improve their efficiencies and become more successful. If any of these scenarios sound attractive, then an online bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship may be perfect for you!

What to Expect from an Online Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship

A degree in entrepreneurship and small business will give you a wide range of skills that can be applied to countless careers, including occupations that have little to do with small businesses or even business in general. You’ll graduate with a deeper understanding of communication, leadership, and analytical thinking, which would make you a viable candidate for all sorts of professions in numerous industries.

Above all, however, you’ll be prepared to create a business and guide companies with smaller staffs, smaller budgets, and smaller profiles. You’ll understand how to successfully take an idea, shape it into a working company, and guide that company through a variety of challenges and growing pains.

When you take an online bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship, you’ll have many different classes to complete. Usually these will include a variety of general-study courses as well as course specific to the major of entrepreneurship. Courses will include the classic studies of math, science, history, literature, and writing. You can usually pick and choose from a long list of general classes.

Eventually you will take classes that focus specifically on your major of entrepreneurship. These programs are taught by a college’s school of business, so you’ll probably start with subjects that are universal to organizations, including economics, marketing, leadership, accounting, and financing. You’ll be exposed to these topics on a broad level and likely won’t go too deep into each topic. For example, you’ll get a foundational understanding of accounting, but you certainly won’t go deep enough to be an accountant. (At least not without more education.)

Finally, you’ll take classes specific to entrepreneurship and small business. These classes will vary, but you can expect courses to include financing for small business, the fundamentals of being an entrepreneur, and the challenges faced by companies with limited resources. Small business and entrepreneurial classes will help you identify new opportunities, develop a business plan, working with customers, and strategies for improving a business.

Once complete, this education will prepare you for many different occupations, including a career as a self-employed business owner.

Popular Careers after Studying Entrepreneurship

After completing an online bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship, you’ll be ready for the challenges of many different careers in a diverse range of industries.

Management Consultants

  • Salary: $87,660
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: Under 5 years

An entrepreneur degree gives you skills in organizational analysis. You’ll know how to best structure management teams to create efficient, effective results. These skills can be seamlessly applied to a career as a management consultant, especially one that focuses on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Management consultants recommend ways to improve an organization’s efficiency. Specific tasks may include gathering information on the company, interviewing personnel, and determining the needs of a client.

In this profession, you could work for a major company, providing in-house service and working as an employee while helping to shape a company’s overall efficiency. However, many will work as consultants, often running a business of their own that is hired by outside clients. This would make you a business owner, so the skills learned during an online bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship could become important, both for your clients as well as yourself!

Entrepreneur

  • Salary: N/A
  • Education: None
  • Experience: None

An entrepreneur is someone who creates a new business, plays a role in the business’ operations, and takes on all or most of the financial risk. While the specifics of what they do can vary, they typically work to bring a new, innovative product or service to the market, although their work does not have to be flashy, inventive, or even original.

To work as an entrepreneur, you don’t need experience or even an education. If you have an idea, the passion to work towards the idea, and the basic skills to bring the idea to reality, you can be an entrepreneur. But an education is certainly helpful. With an online bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship, you’ll have a better understanding of the challenges faced by new businesses, as well as the strategies for overcoming these challenges. An education is not a guarantee of success, but it seems reasonable that with an education you’ll be better equipped to navigate the rough waters of launching a new business.
