About Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University was founded in 1899 by the Michigan Legislature as the Northern State Normal School. In the beginning, it was focused on providing teacher preparation programs. By the middle of the twentieth century, the institution expanded its academic programs, and in 1963, the school adopted its current title, Northern Michigan University. Today, the public, four-year institution is located in the small city of Marquette, Michigan on a 350-acre campus and provides undergraduate and graduate programs. Northern Michigan University states a mission to “challenge its students and employees to think independently and critically, develop lifelong learning habits, acquire career skills, embrace diversity, and become productive citizens in the regional and global community.”

Northern Michigan University supports undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Northern Michigan University also offers online and hybrid programs for added flexibility and convenience. Online programs are offered in either synchronous or asynchronous formats. NMU online degrees are designed to be flexible, affordable options. All online students receive in-state tuition rates, regardless of where they reside.

GetEducated Team Takes
Tony’s Take

NMU is strongest in teaching and faculty access. Classes are small and hands-on. Professors are easy to reach. Office hours are reliable.

Many instructors make extra time when needed. The weak spot is operations, not instruction. Aid and housing help can be uneven. Billing and records follow-through can lag.

Commuter logistics also add friction, with schedule and parking strain. Overall, NMU fits students who want close professor contact. It is less ideal for students needing highly predictable admin handling. The academic core is strong and personal.
