About Misericordia University

In 1924, the Sisters of Mercy established Luzerne County’s first four-year institution of higher learning, College Misericordia. It was established on nearly 100 acres of land in Dallas, Pennsylvania, purchased by the Sisters for this purpose in 1914. Misericordia was founded as, and continues to be, a broad-based liberal arts and pre-professional studies university offering superior education to those of all faiths. The university has been co-educational since the 1970s.

Misericordia University is organized into three academic colleges that offer programs on the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels:

Tony’s Take

Misericordia is strongest in small, personal classes. Professors are easy to reach. Help often continues after class and in labs. Students are usually known by name, not treated like numbers.

Academic strength is not equal in every major. Health-focused paths show the clearest preparation. The Speech and Hearing Clinic adds useful hands-on learning. Career payoff is more mixed in other areas.

Cost can feel high for some students. One view calls it far too expensive. Value depends a lot on program choice. Overall, this is a faculty-connected school with better outcomes in its stronger tracks.
