The Structure of a Biomedical Engineering Online Program

Most biomedical engineering online programs can be completed entirely online without any in-person requirements. That said, we did find one doctorate program that requires students to come to campus three times to complete presentations.

Online students pursuing a master’s in biomedical sciences should expect their program to be around 30-36 credit hours and take 1.5-4 years to complete—depending on whether the program is taken on a full-time or part-time basis.

PhD programs will be about twice as long as a master’s program (~90 credits) and a certificate program will be about half as long as a master’s program (~15 credits).

Also, some master’s programs require a thesis, some require a special capstone project, and some allow students to choose whether or not they would like to pursue a thesis or non-thesis route.

Accreditation for an Online Biomedical Engineering Degree

In addition to school-wide accreditation through a national or regional accrediting body, students should also be on the lookout for ABET-accredited engineering online courses. This is considered the gold-standard for all engineering degrees, including for all biomedical engineering online schools.

Earning a degree from an ABET-accredited program is especially necessary if you’d like to pursue licensure as a professional engineer. That licensure process requires at least a bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited engineering school.

These certificate programs are typically around 15 credits and can usually be completed in around a year or so. They usually do not involve any sort of thesis or capstone projects.

Master’s in Biomedical Engineering Online
