Lakeland University is a four-year private Christian school located in Plymouth, Wisconsin. German immigrants fleeing religious controversy in Europe traveled to the Sheboygan area and founded the school in 1862 as a Mission House, a combination of a seminary and a college. The name Lakeland University came about in 1956. Today, enrollment is no longer limited to pre-theological students, and the college has developed strong programs of study in a wider number of disciplines.
