Program Details
University of Arkansas at Monticello online offers a Master of Music degree with a concentration in Jazz to the nontraditional student. This distance learning is designed for those currently engaged in music as a profession from public school band directors to jazz musicians and scholars. Studies include but are not limited to:
- Jazz history
- Jazz pedagogy
- Jazz theory
Students will gain enhancement in talent and skill through performance training, jazz improvisation and theory courses, and more. This program provides substantial opportunities including graduate assistantships, the use of new technologies, and connection with professional and fraternal organizations. - Bachelors of Music Degree or at least 18 credit hours in one of the following areas:
- a. Performance
- b. Education
- c. Jazz(Instruments include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass and drums)
- Competency on at least one of the instruments listed above
- Three part recorded audition:
- a. Two contrasting standard jazz tunes with head and improvisation
- b. Specific jazz scales and modes
- c. A jazz tune of the applicant's choice
Program requires two 2-week residencies.
