Interestingly enough, Spartanburg Methodist roots began in 1911 when the Textile Industrial Institute was founded to train adult workers. Later, college classes were added as the institution transitioned into a junior college, and then a four-year school. Today, SMC focuses on a student-centered approach to education with foundations of liberal arts and Christianity. The college promotes guiding principles of achievement, integrity, and service.
