Program Details

SMSU offers an emphasis on Reading in its Master of Science in Education program. Students can complete a Reading licensure by completing the courses within the concentration if they do not want a full master’s degree. Those opting for the master’s degree must also take the core classes.

Through research-based coursework, students discover the knowledge and skills to lead others down the path of learning to read. Besides a literacy practicum, students study topics such as:

  • Early literacy and linguistics
  • Developmental reading methods
  • Teaching of literacy
  • Reading assessment and evaluation
