Master of Arts in Teaching / Special Education
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Program Details

Prepare for a career working with a growing segment of the student population, those with special needs, with this online special education degree. Unlike many teaching degrees, this online special education degree is only open to students who do NOT have an undergraduate degree in teacher education. So if you have an undergraduate degree in something other than education and wish to earn both a master’s degree and state licensure, check out this program!

Earn Learning Behavior Specialist I licensure that allows you to teach special education to students in kindergarten through age 21.

You will prepare to work with students with a wide range of disabilities, including:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Autism
  • Social/emotional disabilities
  • Physical disabilities

This integrated curriculum focuses on diverse learners and includes field experiences that require theoretical and practical knowledge application. Students benefit from the Virtual Professional Practice Lab (VPPL), an innovative, mixed-reality technology that “simulates experiences and interacts with participants to help them master their teaching skills.”
