Program Overview

The Master of Science in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Degree program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University is designed for students with an interest in the safety, health, and welfare of personnel at various businesses and organizations. It is the goal of OSH professionals to promote a safe work environment, protecting employees, families, and communities. This program is offered predominately online, though some courses require on-campus attendance for lab exercises.

It is another goal of OSH professionals to reduce injuries and the associated costs by maintaining a safe and ethical practice and workspace. According to the International Labor Organization and World Health Organization, occupational health follows three main objectives: the maintenance and promotion of workers' health and working capacity, the improvement of the working environment and work to become conducive to safety and health, and a development of work organizations and working cultures in a direction which supports health and safety at work and in doing so also promotes a positive social climate and smooth operation and may enhance productivity of the undertakings.

In order to complete this program, students must earn 35 hours of graduate level credit. Of this total, 32 hours are required courses and three come from electives chosen from a relevant list. Students must also complete either a Capstone examination or thesis. Required courses cover topics such as legal liability and workers compensation, food safety, and toxicology. Those enrolled have the option of pursuing an internship at an approved location to fill their elective requirements.
