Cancer Information Management Associate of Science Degree
Students who work in the field of cancer information management identify reported cancer cases and collect relevant data from a patient’s records. These individuals then report this information to health care officials, hospital administrators, and cancer prevention and control agencies. The program curriculum teaches participants how to maintain databases that contain cancer information. All information that is collected is used to enhance cancer prevention techniques and treatment. Cancer information management personnel also may follow up with registered patients in order to track their progress.
In order to perform the above tasks, students must have a strong working knowledge of medical terminology, the human form and function, pathophysiology, and health care quality management. Participants should gain skills in health information management in order to assist them in their duties of managing cancer information. Computer applications and coding systems are principles that are essential for enrolled students to operate while employed. The program curriculum provides students with expert knowledge and skills that will allow them to be successful in their careers as cancer registrars.
In addition to cancer information management core courses, students must complete general education coursework. General education courses add to the breadth of information that students will receive through the curriculum. These courses expand a student’s skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem solving. In addition to online coursework, students are required to complete a Cancer Information Management Practicum. The practicum experience gives individuals hands-on experience that is valuable when applying for jobs. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the Certified Tumor Registrar National Credential Exam.
