Bemidji State University first opened as the Bemidji Normal School in 1919, preparing teachers for employment in Minnesota’s public school system. By 1921, the school expanded into a four-year program. Likewise, as the curriculum expanded, the school transitioned to Bemidji State College in 1957, and by 1975, gained University status.
Bemidji State University offers associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees, along with graduate certificate options. Students can pursue more than 65 undergraduate programs of study, and the most popular include fields in education, business, science, technological studies, criminal justice, and psychology. In 1972, BSU created the Center for Extended Learning to provide distance learning programs. Today, the University continues to promote distance learning and students have multiple bachelor’s degree options.
