About North Carolina Central University

North Carolina Central University was founded in 1909 as a private institution known as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua. In 1915 the school was sold and reorganized resulting in it becoming the National Training School. In 1923, the school became publicly supported. By 1938, North Carolina Central University was awarded University status. The school’s mission is “to prepare students academically and professionally to become leaders prepared to advance the consciousness of social responsibility in a diverse, global society.” North Carolina Central University’s campus is located in Durham, North Carolina.
