Program Overview

Students may learn to master the conceptual framework used to measure and report an organization's financial events through enrolling in the Accounting degree program at Wake Technical Community College. While earning the this degree, students should learn how to communicate with internal and external stakeholders and develop their skills in problem-solving, decision-making, systems analysis, and planning within financial, economic, managerial and technological contexts. Students may also gain a foundation in economics and business ethics.

Accounting is an important tool used by managers of organizations to plan, control, and report financial activity. A thorough knowledge of accounting is necessary to understand the operation and financial condition of any business, non-profit organization, or governmental agency. In addition, the accounting curriculum provides a foundation for students who plan to take examinations to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA). This major offers a broad program of accounting courses, which provides the graduate with a sound foundation for an accounting career or post-graduate studies.

An accounting graduate may find employment in a number of areas including private business, public accounting, not-for-profit organizations or governmental units. Typical work may include areas such as cost analysis, taxation, auditing, accounting systems, taxation, or cash management. The objectives of this program are to enhance students’ knowledge of accounting/tax concepts and standards as they relate to various specialty areas within accounting, and advance students’ knowledge of general business subjects in relation to the functions of an accountant. Graduates should also develop proficiency in the use of business and accounting/tax software applications, develop strong communication skills including business writing skills and problem solving skills, and enforce ethical and legal business practices through the use of critical thinking skills.
