Valley City State University offers a Bachelor of Science in English Education. This degree prepares students for teaching positions in Language Arts in junior and senior high schools.
Students are typically admitted into the Teacher Education program during their sophomore or junior year of college. The University asks that students applying for the Teacher Education program meet certain criteria before applying. Students must have an overall GPA of 2.75. If the GPA is between 2.50 – 2.74, students can be approved if they have an overall GPA of 2.75 if they are an education major, or have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA in the past two semesters. Next students must have satisfactory academic performance in the general education composition and communication requirements and a successful completion of a speech-screening test. Third, applicants must have written recommendations from their advisor, a School of Education instructor, and any other related professionals. Lastly, applicants must meet the state standards on statewide exams, as well as satisfactory performance in the course “Introduction to Education”.
If admitted into this program, students will be prepared to be a teacher with creativity, knowledge skilled classroom techniques and be able to teach a variety of subjects based on the required courses. These courses include but are not limited to English, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Reading, Literature, Theatre and Communication. Graduates will also know how to select and organize appropriate material for the secondary school classroom, how to use technology as an effective teaching/learning tool, and how to engage their students in learning opportunities.
The knowledge graduates will possess will come from their experiences outside of the classroom. VCSU offers multiple opportunities where English Education majors provide expertise in a variety of campus functions including: working as student tutors for The Learning Center, writing and editing press releases for the Viking Sports News, and working with numerous other student and campus publications and productions. English Education is a well-rounded major that prepares graduates for a variety of work following completion.
