Program Overview

The University of the Southwest offers a MSED Curriculum and Instruction Bilingual degree that is well suited for educators who wish to enhance the learning of Spanish speaking and diverse students. Enrolled individuals gain in-depth knowledge and skills which allow them to successfully work with Spanish speaking students. MSED Curriculum and Instruction Bilingual Degree is beneficial for those who are already in the field or those who wish to enter this career with a high quality education.

The MSED Curriculum and Instruction Bilingual Degree Program consists of 36 credit hours in a variety of education related course topics. Students are required to take core courses and specialization courses. Core courses students will explore during their studies include Educational Research and Learning & Human Development. Specialization courses that students are required to complete include Reading & the Bilingual Learner, Teaching English as a Second Language, Humanities for Bilingual Learners, Science & Math for Bilingual Learners, BIL ED School Community & Family, Early Literacy & Language Acquisition, Research & Evaluation of BIL Learners & Programs, Culturally Diverse & Special Needs Populations, Topics in Bilingual Education, and Spanish Comparative Linguistics. These courses are designed to ensure that students are well prepared to further their education and obtain employment in this specialized position within the education career field.

All courses for this program are available online. The online learning environment provides flexibility for enrolled students who are employed or have other obligations. Time management and word processing skills are very important for students who enroll in this degree program. Students must have 12 credit hours of Spanish or 8th grade proficiency in order to be successful in this program. Some courses will be taught only in Spanish. It is necessary that students who are interested in this program are proficient with the language.

    The University of the Southwest, private, non-denominational liberal arts university, is located in Hobbs, New Mexico. Originally founded in 1956 as Hobbs Baptist College, a 2-year junior college, the name of the institution changed to New Mexico Baptist College in 1958, when it became a four-year college. The institution became known as the College of the Southwest in 1962, and in 2008 became the University of the Southwest. The University of the Southwest is a Christ-centered institution that teaches the belief of God, Jesus Christ, and the Bible, and faculty and staff with Christ centered values instruct students to live, work and learn together while valuing each others cultures and beliefs.
