Program Overview

The University of the Southwest offers a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Sports Management that is well suited for students who seek employment in the domestic and international sports industry. Graduates could potentially find employment as general managers, sport equipment sales personnel, radio announcers, corporate sports department, recreational directors for organizations, directors of sports arenas, and sports agents. Enrolled students gain skills and knowledge in economics, management, sociology, project planning, and law that are used in the sports industry. Graduates will complete the program with hands-on experience within the field in order to further prepare them for the variety of employment options. Students who finish this degree program are also eligible for certification with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the National American Society of Sports Management.
 
The Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Sports Management Program consists of 120 total credit hours that may be completed in four years. Students are required to complete general education courses, institutional coursework, major coursework, and sports management emphasis coursework. General education topics that students will cover include fine arts, humanities, social science, science labs, mathematics, computer applications, economics, composition, literature, and speech. Major level coursework students are required to complete include principles of accounting I & II, business law, principles of finance, principles of management, ethics, organizational behavior, creating a business plan, and principles of marketing. Lastly, students will complete sports management emphasis courses. These courses include socio-cultural dimensions of sport, topics in management, sport consumer behavior, administration of physical education & sports, sport marketing, managing diversity, leadership, effective organizational teams, and two upper level electives. These courses are designed to ensure that students are well prepared to further their education and obtain employment in positions within the sports management career field.
 
All courses for this program are available online. The online learning environment provides flexibility for enrolled students who are employed or have other obligations. Students must be highly disciplined to complete a large amount of coursework. Time management and word processing skills are very important for students who enroll in this degree program. In order to graduate, students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale) in the sports management emphasis area and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

    The University of the Southwest, private, non-denominational liberal arts university, is located in Hobbs, New Mexico. Originally founded in 1956 as Hobbs Baptist College, a 2-year junior college, the name of the institution changed to New Mexico Baptist College in 1958, when it became a four-year college. The institution became known as the College of the Southwest in 1962, and in 2008 became the University of the Southwest.
