Program Details

The University of South Alabama offers an online adult nurse practitioner program, the DNP in Adult-Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner degree.  This degree prepares advanced practice nurses who are interested in playing the role of primary care provider.  Students learn to care for all adults and family members over the age of 13 in such settings as primary care clinics, health departments, VA facilities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other out-patient settings.  There are a number of required courses in a degree that specializes in courses that incorporate Interprofessional Education working in teams with other disciplines.  Some of the required courses are:

  • Advanced Pathophysiology 
  • Advanced Pharmacology
  • Advanced Physical Assessment Across the Life Span

Graduates are prepared to diagnose illnesses, order tests, prescribe medications, and more.  

Unlike many DNP programs, this degree does not require a thesis or dissertation; students complete an evidence-based scholarly project that will have a substantial effect on healthcare and patient outcomes.
