Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers a Master of Science in Management degree in Human Resource Management for students and professionals in business that wish to develop their knowledge of advanced principles and practices in personnel management and personnel relations within an organization. Through the specialization, students will develop an understanding of leadership issues as well as develop their own leadership style. Individuals will also learn the responsibilities of roles in human resource management and how it will impact the performance of individuals and teams. Students will develop the skills needed to manage skilled and specialized human resource teams and how to counsel senior management on key personnel issues.

As part of the program, students will study materials relating to the management of personnel in business, nonprofit, and government organizations. Those classes include organizational theory, intercultural communication and leadership, financial decision making for managers, statistics for managerial decision makers, organizational theory and behavior in a global environment, issues and practices in human resources management, employee and labor relations, recruitment and selection, job analysis, assessment, and compensation, organizational development and change, current perspectives in training and development, and managing virtual and global teams.

Upon completion of the degree, students will have demonstrated the necessary professional qualifications and knowledge needed for roles and responsibilities in the field of human resources. Those qualifications include the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the role and historical development of human resources management and of various approaches to employee development, employee relations, and performance management, to demonstrate an understanding of evolving theories and practices in human resource management, and to demonstrate an understanding of the strategic and contextual approach to problem solving and the formulation of policy and strategist, with particular reference to global, multicultural organizations.

    School Overview

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
