Program Overview

University of Maryland at University College offers the Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Management for professionals and students interested in a career involving the management of public service organizations relating to public safety, law enforcement, or the legal system. Leaders in this field have the unique and demanding responsibilities of dealing with emergencies, managing criminal populations or criminal activity, and preserving the peace, all while maintaining a respect for individual rights and freedoms. The program involves learning how to assume the role of leadership in the criminal justice system and explores the complex challenges leaders face in these agencies.

Students will study material through courses which relate the fields of management and criminal justice education. Those classes include organizational theory, intercultural communication and leadership, financial decision making for managers, statistics for managerial decision making, critical analysis of the criminal justice system, perspective in law enforcement management, issues in correctional administration, seminar in security management, criminal justice intelligence systems and approaches, legal aspects within the criminal justice system, and issues in criminal justice leadership.

Upon completion of the program, students will have demonstrated the necessary education and professional qualities for roles in management and administration within the criminal justice system. The qualifications demonstrate that the student has been able to apply the principles they have learned in the program into their eventual development as a functional affective professional in their field.  Those qualifications include utilizing theory and research to analyze historical trends and current perspectives in criminal justice, how to use research to evaluate factors related to crime and the impact of crime on criminal justice policies, practices, and procedures, how to evaluate the impact of the constitutional policy and procedures on the criminal justice system, and how to analyze the impact of the criminal justice process on victims and perpetrators.

    The University of Maryland, University College is a public university that was founded in 1947. The main headquarters of UMUC is in Adelphi, Maryland, a town that borders College Park. UMUC is one of eleven divisions of the University of Maryland and provides quality educational opportunities for primarily non-traditional adult students. UMUC developed as a result of the popularity of evening programs for adults that were offered by the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. The University of Maryland established the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) in 1947, and in 1959 it became the University of Maryland College. The UMUC became an independent university in 1970, and in 1988 it became part of the University System of Maryland.

    The UMUC offers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in professional subjects, all of which can be earned online or in hybrid formats.
