The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was founded in 1947 to provide a relevant and comprehensive education. According to their website, the school “…offers an unparalleled breadth of programs, each tailored to meet the needs of the marketplace.” Because of the wide range of programs offered and its online nature, students are sure to find something that fits their personal and/or professional interests as well as their schedule. One of the school’s many programs in a quickly growing field is the Bachelor's Degree program in Cybersecurity.
The Cybersecurity program at UMUC prepares students to be leaders in the field of protecting data, information, and other electronic assets. The program focuses on techniques, policies, procedures, and technologies that are used to secure and defend information and information systems. Specific skills students will learn include how to protect an organization’s information and digital assets by utilizing technology and risk management and assessment. Students will learn to set-up systems to provide real-time security, conduct risk and vulnerability tests and analyze those results, and develop and implement short- and long-term plans for digital security. Through the courses and knowledge gained, students will be prepared for a variety of careers in the information systems and data administration fields.
All students are required to complete 120 credits of coursework to earn their degree. 33 of those credits will be comprised of major requirements, 41 will be general education classes, and 46 will be minor and elective courses. Major courses cover a solid foundation in information systems, network architecture, and security policy. This foundation is crucial for setting up successful security networks. While students are able to select any minor, UMUC recommends accounting, computer systems, homeland security, and political science as minors that mesh well with the course content.
The degree requirements can all be completed online. Individuals interested in learning more are encouraged to contact program faculty.
