University of Maryland – Baltimore County offers a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in ESOL, for those individuals who want an online education on becoming a more effective teacher to those learning English as their second language. Coursework focuses on language acquisition and testing, cultural studies, and more.


  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Three letters of recommendations
  • Statement of purpose explaining your interest in the field
  • Official test scores—one of the following options:
    • 153+ on the GRE verbal test OR
    • 297+ GRE composite score (verbal + math) OR
    • 527+ on the Praxis I test
  • Passing scores on each of the three Praxis Core assessments: 156+ on reading, 162+ on writing, and 150+ on math
  • Second language speakers of English must submit one of the following scores:
    • 213+ on the computer-based TOEFL
    • 80+ on the internet-based test TOEFL
    • 6.5+ on IELTS
    • 53+ on PTE Academic
