    School Overview

    The University at Buffalo SUNY, also known as the University of Buffalo, is a public research institution that has campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York. UB was founded as a private college in 1846, and became a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1962. It was founded as a private medical school intended to train doctors to serve the areas of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and their surrounding communities. In 1964, land was purchased to develop a second campus in Amherst, and this campus became a comprehensive campus for UB’s non-medical disciplines. UB’s undergraduate college, graduate schools and law school are located on the Amherst campus. UB is the largest comprehensive public university in the northeastern area of the United States, the largest university in the SUNY system.
