Program Overview

Parsons The New School for Design offers a Master of Science degree in Strategic Design & Management. The curriculum is 36 credits, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be earned in order to graduate. No credits may be transferred. Students have the potential to finish the degree in two years, if they complete 9 credits each term. The degree must be completed in a timely manner.

The program allows for flexibility so that students can take courses that fit into their schedules. Students can also take courses both on-campus and online, if desired. Since the courses are offered globally, there is a diverse student body. Students have a wide variety of different backgrounds and perspectives, which creates a unique, rich learning environment. The online program has a mandatory, intensive workshop component. This workshop is one week and is held in the middle of January on-campus in New York City.

The curriculum combines elements of business, management, and leadership with studio work. This program was launched in Fall 2012, and was designed in accordance with the global economy. The program integrates design thinking, service design, and sustainability frameworks. Students focus on the global economy and building perspectives on topics of business, operations, sustainability, management, leadership, entrepreneurship, design innovation, and design research.

Some of the courses in this degree include: Strategic Design & Management in New Economies, Designing & Implementing Sustainable Business Models, and Managing High-Performance Creative Project Teams. Students must also either complete an internship or field/research study.

    School Overview

    Emerging in 1919 in New York City as a promoter of innovative and creative thinking, the New School for Social Research began as a new kind of academic institution, an innovative college where faculty and students would be free to honestly and directly address the problems facing societies in the 20th century.     The courses offered by The New School at first reflected the founders' interest in the emerging social sciences, international affairs, history, philosophy, drama and literature, writing, performing arts, fine arts, foreign languages, media studies, and information processing. Several of the schools affer fully online programs leading to certificates, associate's degrees, and bachelor's degrees.
