The mission of the Accounting Department is to provide quality curriculum, instruction, and programs to meet the existing and changing needs of students, the community, industry, local government, and all citizens who look to Riverland Community College for lifelong learning and professional development opportunities.
Accountants perform duties manually and with computer assistance. The use of technology helps teach accounting skills while gaining the computer expertise required to succeed in today's competitive business environment.
After completing this program, Accounting Diploma graduates will be able to complete accounting processes and prepare financial statements according to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) both manually and using computerized accounting software, analyze and communicate the effects of basic tax rules (including payroll taxes) on individuals, partnerships and corporations and prepare basic tax returns, apply the fundamentals of activity based costing, job costing and process costing. They will also be ablet to demonstrate understanding of cost behavior including fixed and variable costs, cost/volume/profit analysis, budgeting and variance analysis, and other analytical tools for decision-making.

Riverland Community College is an institution located in Austin, Minnesota, and is part of the larger Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. RCC was founded in 1940 as Austin Junior College. The school later changed its name to Austin Area Vocational-Technical School to match the technology-oriented academics offered at the institution. The title Riverland Community College was established in 1996 because of its merge with different schools in the region. Today the public, two-year college maintains campuses in Albert Lea and Owatonna, in addition to the Austin site, and promotes its mission as “a regional comprehensive community college inspiring learning for living through a personalized educational environment.”
Riverland Community College offers career technical training and associate’s degrees. More than 350 Riverland courses are offered online or through hybrid formatting, and several programs are offered completely online.
