Associate of Applied Science in Administrative Support Technology
The Associate of Applied Science in Administrative Support Technology degree offered by New River Community College is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. This program prepares students to meet the demand of electronic and office administrative support services. Students learn competencies related to word processors and operators, correspondence secretaries and administrative secretaries. An objective of this program is to train its students in basic skills, as well as advanced information systems competencies. Students learn management, word processing, microcomputer usage, and human relations. This program prepares students for positions such as: administrative services manager, executive secretary and administrative assistant, first line supervisor in administrative support, office and administrative support workers, office clerk, receptionist and information clerk, secretary and administrative professional, and word processor and typist.
It is important to note that students wishing to enroll in this program must meet the admissions requirements established for the college. Students should have the academic prerequisites such as communication, English language competencies, and basic Mathematical skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Students learn competencies related to becoming an efficient secretary in business, government, industry, law offices, medical offices, and other organizations. Half of the curriculum of this program is devoted to General Education courses and open electives. Students gain a liberal arts based education through these requirements. Individuals use their liberal arts education upon which they can build their skills related to Administrative Support Technology. Students can also use the credits that they have gained in this program to transfer to future baccalaureate studies.
This program requires its students to take a minimum of 66 credit hours in order to graduate with the Associate of Applied Science in Administrative Support Technology degree. The required courses include, but are not limited to: Editing and Proofreading Skills, Records Management, Business Mathematics, Principles of Accounting. Writing For Business, Microcomputer Office Applications, Office Administration, and Keyboarding I and II.
