Missouri State University is a public, comprehensive university system with a mission in public affairs. Their purpose is to develop fully educated persons with a focus on ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement. MSU first opened in 1905, in Springfield, Missouri, as the Fourth District Normal School, with the goals of educating future teachers. The State Fruit Experiment Station, founded in Mountain Grove in 1899, would become part of Missouri State in 1974. Throughout the nineteenth century, Missouri State built facilities, expanded academic programs, and changed its name; becoming Southwest Missouri State University in 1972. In 2005, the school adopted its current title, Missouri State University.
