The Human Resource Associate Science program at Minnesota State Community and Technical College is designed for students who wish to gain entry-level employment in Human Resources as well as those who wish to transfer to partner universities and continue their education. Students will be prepared to support companies and employees with skills in communication, data/record keeping, administration, recruitment, training, and many other areas. Those who complete this program should be able to understand and use federal, state, and local regulations and requirements for HR functions, use effective interpersonal communication skills such as negotiation, presentation, and training, and administer ethical policies and procedures related to a variety of processes such as termination, evaluation, and compensation. Students will be able to administer safety and health programs, use technology for applications such as word processing and spreadsheets, and analyze and solve problems and situations.
This degree has both program classes as well as general education classes. General education courses include a wide range of academic areas such as mathematics, various sciences, communications, and humanities; this will provide the student with a broad and globally-based knowledge and skill-set. Students may be required to take developmental courses in reading, math, and writing in order to prepare them for education on a college level; whether these classes are required is determined by the student’s score on the Accuplacer assessment.
Human Resources is characterized by individuals who work in the various aspects of an organization, business, or an economy. Because organization often regard its workforce as vital to the system flourishing, many require a full-time manager or managing team to oversee and guide the workforce in order to make the most of those assets. Human resource management is responsible for selecting, training, assessing, and rewarding employees as well as overseeing the overall leadership and culture of the workforce. Managers also make sure the company is abiding by labor laws. The Department of Human Resources is typically the liaison between employees and the company’s managers in certain cases. The precise role of a manager or an assistant also depends on the size and nature of the institution.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College (“M State”) is a two-year public institution of higher education, located in the city of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Students can enroll in courses at M State’s campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena. The Fergus Falls campus has a liberal arts focus, and about 75 percent of its students transfer to four-year colleges and universities after they attend M State.
M State offers associate's degree and certificate programs. Many students at M State choose to complete the first two years of their bachelor's degree by earning a University Transfer degree at any of the or online through eCampus. M State’s eCampus offers over 25 programs and majors that can be completed entirely online.
