Program Overview

Metropolitan Community College offers a Health Information Management Systems-Medical Office Management program that awards the Associate in Applied Science Degree. The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions performing administrative or clerical duties within a healthcare organization or medical office environment. Students have the capability to advance the necessary knowledge and expertise within a variety of subjects within the healthcare and technology fields.

Students may complete the degree entirely online; however, if a student is interested in traditional classes, they may enroll within the same program on the Elkhorn Valley, Fort Omaha, and South Omaha campuses. The program requires students to complete 97 credit hours in order to graduate. The credit hours are divided into 27 general education, 49 major requirement, and 21 option requirement credits. Students may customize their course of study by completing multiple options within this program.

MCC provides students with general education courses that deliver the essential fundamentals and a strong background within a broad range of subjects.  These courses are designed to develop perspectives and problem-solving techniques that will be implemented in the real world. The general education credits are further divided into 9 communication, 4.5 social science, 4.5 quantitative, and 9 other credits.

The major requirement courses at MCC have been developed to strengthen the student’s career skills and knowledge required to transfer to a four-year institutions. Students will need to complete 11 required courses for a total of 49 credit hours. These courses will educate students within the field of Health Information Management Systems. Some of the topics within the major’s courses are careers in healthcare, healthcare issues, HIPAA regulations, electronic health record technology, and basic coding procedures.

Option courses provide a specialized education for students that would like to enter specific field within the Health Information Management Systems field. The 21 Medical Office Management Option credits will be acquired through the completion of 5 courses. The option courses are Medical Office Communications, Introduction to Insurance, Medical Transcription I, Introduction to Electronic Health Records, and Database Fundamentals.

MCC’s Medical Office Management Option courses list a variety of educational goals for students that are enrolled within the program. Students should be proficient in skills such as transcribing medical reports from physician dictation, utilizing proper health data collection techniques, and securing databases. Courses within the option will cover topics such as medical transcription mechanics, reimbursement methodologies, liability insurance, and electronic health records.
