Program Details

Maryland Institute College of Art offers a Master of Professional Studies in The Business of Art and Design. This program provides a highly concentrated education in business management specifically for artists, designers, and related professions. This degree focuses on the production of creative goods and services and gives students the knowledge and skills necessary to start, sustain, or grow an art or design related business. Students will complete most of the classes online, with a brief stay at the University.

Students will earn 30 credits that consist of three 4-day residencies, two 4-week intensives, and six 8-week sessions over a 14 month period. The residencies take place over a long weekend. Students will also take courses in Business Basics, Thesis and Reflection, Business Management, Business Writing, Human Resources, Taxes, Marketing, Intellectual property, Social Media and Marketing, Contracts and Negotiations, Business Ethics, Finance, Leadership, and Thesis Development. Students will chose to focus on either a path for the designer/manager or a path for the creative artist/entrepreneur.

Graduates will have gained an understanding of finance and accounting, legal issues-including copyrights, trademarks, and intellectual property-and strategic marketing skills to move their business plan from theory to the marketplace. Students will have also obtained an understanding of business ethics, leadership and public speaking skills, and business writing--all elements for long-term professional success. Lastly, students will be able to define their business goals, assess their strengths, and, when applicable, develop a business plan.
