Master of Public Administration
Marist College offers an online Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree designed to give students knowledge and skills for public sector and not-for-profit program management positions. This program also relates to such fields as health care, criminal justice, and human service professionals. The curriculum is based on the standards found within the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NAPSAA). Students are expected to learn the political, legal, ethical and social context of administration processes. In addition, achieving an understanding of positive organizational behavior and implementing various administrative techniques.
Admission requirements include a graduate application with accompanying $50 fee, official transcripts from all prior undergraduate/graduate institutions attended, a current résumé, and two recommendation letters (preferably one from an academic source and one from an employer). Applicants also must write a brief essay explaining why they wish to pursue an MPA degree and how it relates to their career goals. In the instance an applicant has a cumulative undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0 they may be required to submit their GRE score.
MPA students are required to take a total of 39 credits (those lacking two years of professional experience are required to take a three-hour internship course). There are ten core courses which include: Introduction to Public Administration, Politics and Policy, Public Budgeting, Human Resource Management in Public Organizations, Administrative Law, Technology-Management for Public Managers, Statistics for Public Managers, Program Planning and Evaluation, Organizational Theory and Change, and Innovation in Public Administration. The student may choose from one of three elective focus areas (9 hrs.) which are Public Management, Ethical Leadership, and Health Care Administration.
