Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Education A.A. degree is intended to help students aspiring to teach grade levels 4 and above. This is preparation program designed to expose students to a portion of education curriculum and eventually help them potentially pursue a 4-year teaching degree at a college or university. The degree requires 61-63 credits and may be completed over the course of four semesters. Students will participate in approximately 16 credits per semester. Some of the classes the degree encompasses are as follows: College English I and II, Education Field Experience I, and various teaching electives of the student’s choice.
Students anticipating transferring courses to a 4-year university must identify the transfer institution early and consult with an advisor, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, successfully take and pass the Praxis PAPA exam, maintain a portfolio with child abuse, state police, FBI and health clearances, and document all observations and experiences, among a few other items. It is also recommended that students take at least two special education courses prior to transferring.
Students who complete this degree should be able to accurately describe a middle school and secondary education setting in both the organizational and philosophical sense, be able to explain adolescent development and the progression of biological influences within a person’s lifespan, and understand how to interact with students and their families, and encourage positive familial relationships.
