Program Overview

Kennebec Community College offers a Health information technology program that combines the expanding arena of health care with the highest technology. Once completed, you will be a certified health information management professional. As health information professionals you are also the expert on patent data that health care professionals rely on to perform their jobs. 

Registered health information technicians help ensure the quality of all medical records by verifying their proper entry, completeness and accuracy. Health information technicians also help improve patient care and control costs by using computer application to assemble and analyze patient data. Most Registered Health Information Technicians specialize in coding diagnoses and procedures in patient records for research and reimbursement.

 

Along with the health information technician program a medical coding certificate is also offered for students who nee to upgrade their coding skills. This program is also fully integrated into the associate of applied science degree in health information. There is a technology program for those students who wish to continue their studies.

 

The mission of the health Information technology program is to provide necessary educational opportunities to help students prepare for their certification. The mission is also help students practice as registered health information technicians. In the health car environment, health information technology has become an evolving profession.

 

In the Health information technology program, professional help students by education and developing them as a skilled work force to support all the needs of the health care industry. A health information technician is a specialist in a wide range of responsibilities including; managing medical records, coding information for reimbursement, research and administering information systems. This program offers students opportunities to develop necessary skills and knowledge to attain an AAS degree and eligibility for the registered health information technician credential.

    School Overview

    Kennebec Valley Community College is a public two-year school located in Fairfield, Maine. KVCC was established in 1969 as one of the seven colleges in the Maine Community College System. Many students choose to receive their associate’s degree here and then move on to an affiliate four-year institution to earn their bachelor’s degree. Kennebec Valley Community College offers certificates of completion and associate’s degrees in the following programs: health sciences, computer science, business administration and various trades programs.

    Distance learning classes are for the convenience of students so that they can complete coursework on their own time. All instruction will be done online and no on-campus class sessions will be held. Hybrid classes are also available where students mostly attend class online but are required to come on campus for a few class sessions.
