Program Details

Golden Gate University believes that the Master of Science in Taxation program is one of the finest tax programs in the nation. Students will learn the most modern tax concepts, theory, trends and knowledge within the program's classes. In addition, the program’s courses will cover topics such as gift tax, partnerships, C corporations, LLCs and S corporations, multi-state tax, international tax, tax issues, and tax research. The program also offers an accelerated, “fast track” cohort program that provides students with the opportunity of a tax internship.The instructors of the program are experienced tax practitioners and lawyers that provide real-world experience and application to the classroom. Due to the intensive curriculum, many of the graduates of the Master of Science in Taxation program are regularly employed within the Big Four firms.

The programs courses can be completed entirely online within Golden Gate University’s CyberCampus. Students will participate in interactive lectures and prepared web modules. If students are interested in a more traditional class format, the program also offers campus-based courses on the San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles campuses.

Throughout the program, students will be able to attend the GGU's career development workshops. The workshops include practice in career search techniques, resume writing, interview coaching, and also provides networking opportunities. All of the workshops are led by accounting and tax professionals. Students will participate in training sessions, technical panels, and many practice situations in order to apply what they have learned to future careers.

In order to complete the program, students will need to complete 30 Advanced Program units. The 30 Advanced Program units are further divided into 21 Core Course and 9 Elective units. Some of the offered Core Courses are Advanced Federal Income Taxation, Federal Tax Procedure, Property Transactions, and Tax Timing.

The program’s courses will cover a variety of subjects within the field of accounting. Students will learn topics such as common law, business purpose, step transactions, tax avoidance, gross income, tax benefit rule, and related party transactions. Students will also gain experience in areas such as representing clients during an IRS tax audit, creating a tax benefit plan, identify tax issues and communication.

Students that have not taken any taxation courses should complete the 8-week, summer accounting program. The program is described as “intensive” and takes place during the months of June and July.
