Program Details

Individuals who are interested in a career working in recreation and leisure settings may benefit from considering the Recreation Management A.A.S. degree at Dakota College at Bottineau. By taking this program, students are also qualified to become certified as an Associate Park and Recreational Professional through the National Park and Recreation Association.

The focus in this program will be on program planning, the base of recreation, and administration. These elements will be useful in careers such as activities director, camp director, recreation leader, park ranger, playground director, recreational protective service agent, and camp counselor.

Students will take a total of 61 credits over two years (four semesters). Some of the mandatory courses are Introduction to Computers, Foundations of Recreation, Environmental Science, Recreation Administration, and Recreation Program Planning. Besides the required courses, students will also need to select Park Management, Outdoor Recreation, or Commercial Recreation/Tourism, and complete the courses included in the option. The different options include courses that are relevant to the chosen area of study.

The course Principles of Tourism are required for all of the focused options. While in this course, students will learn about tourism planning and marketing, tourism history, travel behavior, and different kinds of businesses that offer tourism services.
