Certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Canisius College offers a Certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This program is entirely online and prepares teachers to become TESOL specialists in New York. There is a growing need for skilled teachers who are certified to teach non-English speakers. Applicants should have completed their Master’s Degree in Teaching.
Students will take six courses (18 credits) in order to complete the certificate. These include courses in Cultural Issues, Theory and Practice of Bilingual/TESOL Education, Linguistics, Methods/Materials of TESOL, Evaluation/Assessment in Bilingual/TESOL Education, and Supervised Fieldwork.
Graduates are expected to have gained a number of skills. These include demonstrating content, pedagogical, and professional knowledge and possessing an understanding of language as a system, including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and semantics. Graduates will also demonstrate necessary professional skills and dispositions. Lastly, students will be able to apply their acquired knowledge in order to evaluate their own professional performance and decision making.

- Completion of a master's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Evidence of teaching certification complete or in progress
- Evidence of completion of 12 credit hours of college/university level credit in a language other than English
- Submission of two (2) letters of recommendation
