Master of Education in Effective Teaching and Instructional Leadership
The Master of Education in Effective Teaching and Instructional Leadership degree offered by Buena Vista University is a program of study that is offered to students in a completely online format. This program encourages students to choose one emphasis track. The Curriculum and Instruction track aims to equip students with the skills needed to serve as an instructional leader among their peers, to help students acquire the knowledge necessary for data driven leadership, and to give students the ability to put learning into practice in the classroom.
This program culminates in a Capstone portfolio that is designed to convey a student’s synthesis of learning across the program. The portfolio requires students to assemble learning artifacts, which demonstrate the skills and knowledge they acquired during the course of the program. This program can be completed in as little as two years. Students can transfer no more than six semester hours of credit toward this Master’s degree program.
A student must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in order to graduate from this program. This program is split up into core courses and track courses. The required courses that all Master of Education students at Buena Vista must complete include: Intro to Graduate Study and Research; Learning, Development, and Motivation; Social and Cultural Foundations; and Assessment and Evaluation of Classroom Learning. The required courses for the Effective Teaching and Instructional Leadership emphasis includes: Principles of Instructional Design and Curriculum Planning; Cognition and Instruction; Differentiating Instruction for Diverse Learners; Professional Development and Instructional Leadership; Collaborating with Home, School, and Community Partners; and the Capstone Portfolio.
There are some admissions requirements for this program. A student must have a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution and they must have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
