Program Overview

The Bachelor of Organizational Leadership degree offered by Buena Vista University is a program of study that is available to students in a completely online format. This program aims to equip its graduates with the tools and organizational skills that are necessary to perform administrative roles within an organization effectively. The course work in the curriculum of this program emphasizes both general business practices and procedures along with communication skills necessary to interact, problem solve, and lead other members of a working community. The courses required in this program are interdisciplinary, which means that students take courses that are from different subject areas. Individuals who have work experience and a strong interest in taking various courses in different subject matters. There are two tracks of study available to students in this program: Human Services and Business.

The cross-disciplinary program in Organizational Leadership intends to help its students to acquire the tools and organizational skills that are foundational to succeed in leadership and managerial roles. Buena Vista University requires its students to complete at least 120 credit hours of courses in order to graduate. Students must complete a core of General Education courses that are necessary to a student’s Liberal Arts education and will help them to think critically and analyze effectively. Students must take courses in Mathematics, English, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and the Humanities. These requirements are split up into the Intellectual Foundation, the Mathematics Foundation, the Written Communication Foundation, and the Intellectual Exploration Foundation.

There are 45 credit hours of courses that are required for Organizational Leadership majors. These courses include: Accounting for Managers, Organizational Communication Theory and Practice, Conflict Management, Leadership Communication, Interviewing, Principles of Management, Business Law I, Social Responsibility of Business, and Principles of Marketing. Students who chose the Human Services track take the following courses: Social Welfare Programs and Policies, Human Services in Rural Communities, and Methods of Social Research. The Business track majors must complete the following courses: Human Resource Management, Organizational Theory, and Business Marketing. Students must also take elective courses to round out their requirements.

    Buena Vista was founded in Storm Lake, Iowa, by the Presbyterian Church in 1891. Today, the university is a four-year, private, not-for-profit institution of higher education, and retains its affiliations with the Presbyterian Church.
