Program Details

Allen County Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Addiction and Prevention Studies for students who are interested in addiction studies for the study of criminal justice, law, or social work, and who are interested in working with addicts. Students will learn about various human services fields, including counseling for substance abuse, healthcare professionals, social workers, and juvenile service workers. Students will learn about addictive issues that different social groups have in society, including addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, binge eating, smoking, hoarding, and a variety of other behaviors that result in a psychological or physiological need to continue those behaviors.

Students will study materials relating to addiction care, counseling, therapy services, and other fields related to criminological treatment of substance abuse. Those classes include English composition, general psychology, substance abuse awareness, introduction to counseling, introduction to group counseling, introduction to computers , business mathematics, addiction services, ethics and confidentiality, and medical high risk issues, among others.

Upon completion of the certification, students will have demonstrated the necessary educational qualifications for counseling roles for addiction counseling services. Those qualifications include the ability to apply sound ethical, legal, and business practices in the work of an addiction counselor; to demonstrate the ability to implement counseling, prevention, and intervention services related to addiction counseling; to promote diversity and advocacy as related to addiction counseling; to employ various assessment techniques to appropriately intervene in meeting the needs of diverse addiction clientele; to use evidence-based research literature to inform practice in meeting the needs of diverse addiction clientele; and to use diagnostic tools to diagnose addiction and other disorders in diverse clientele.
