Diploma in Fire Science
Albany Technical College offers an Diploma in Fire Science for students who want to work in emergency or fire services and want to develop a strong foundation in the technical and theoretical aspects of dealing with fire and hazardous materials. Students will develop professional and leadership skills, ethics, and emergency service procedures.
Through the program, students will take part in a curriculum which will develop their understanding of leadership roles and responsibilities in fire science, as well as practical understanding of fire science and prevention. Those classes include composition and rhetoric, college algebra, introduction to computers, introduction to the fire services, fire administration, supervision, and leadership, firefighting strategy and tactics, fire service instructors, hazardous materials operations, fire prevention and inspection, fire service safety and loss control, fire administration management, fire service hydraulics, fire protection systems, fire service building construction, incident command, and fire and arson investigation.
Upon completion of the program, students will have demonstrated an understanding of the theories and principles relating to the science of fire safety, and will have demonstrated the educational and professional qualifications for future studies and entry-level roles in the field. These qualifications include but are not limited to the ability to utilize basic interpersonal, group, and public communication skills; to demonstrate the ability to utilize accurate and clearly written technical reports and business communication; to demonstrate the ability to relate basic mathematical models to fire and life safety; to demonstrate basic theories and fundamentals of how and why fires start, spread, and are controlled; to demonstrate understanding of building construction related to fire and life safety, including inspections, pre-incident planning, and emergency operations; to demonstrate understanding of the basic responsibilities of company officers, including supervision, delegation, problem solving, decision-making, communications, and leadership; and to demonstrate the ability to evaluate the laws, rules, regulations, jurisdiction and codes relevant to fire prevention.
