Heather Ellison, 36, works as a restaurant manager in Rodney, Minnesota, while earning a master of business administration (MBA) at Baker College Online. She is a winner of a GetEducated.com $1,000 distance learning scholarship award.
Ellison is a single mother working 50+ hours a week, so distance learning became the only option for her to achieve a higher education. She attended a university directly out of high school, but dropped out during her last semester.
After working in the restaurant industry since she was sixteen, Ellison now values the importance of a college degree. She explains, “This is not where I saw myself being, and this is not where my passions lie.” Ellison’s son has a condition called Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, and her job does not allow her to spend enough time with her son. After searching for a solution, Ellison decided distance learning was the answer to fulfilling her dueling responsibilities as a mother and career woman.
Ellison admits, “After a lot of self-examination, I realized that I really needed to make a change in my life and my career so that I can have a better quality of life for myself, and for my son.”
She found the Master in Human Resource Management at Baker College Online to be the best fit for her career aspirations and schedule. “I also realized that although I have a lot of years of management experience, it has all been in the restaurant industry,” says Ellison, “and it would be very difficult for me to make a career change with such a limited scope of experience.”
Ellison loves Baker’s online format, and having never taken a distance learning course before, she was surprised to learn the course ware so quickly. Ellison appreciates the flexibility of the online program.
In the future, Ellison hopes to enroll in online graduate classes and work toward a Master of Health Services Administration. She wants to show her son that it is never too late to follow one’s dreams and build the courage to actively pursue them.
GetEducated.com will continue to offer free distance learning scholarships for online master’s MBA degrees in the spring and fall. The deadlines for these online college scholarships are March 15 and October 15.
