Between 6 million and 8 million people in the United States have some form of language impairment, according to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. For some, it’s genetic. For others, it’s situational or trauma-induced. No matter the cause, everyone deserves the chance to connect with others through conversation. Students can earn a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders online from Maryville, and broaden their understanding of voice, speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders as they study topics like:

• Education/psychology of exceptional children
• Anatomy and physiology of speech mechanisms
• Language fluency development and disorders
• Advanced speech pathology
• Audiology

This highly specialized program provides the case-based learning and clinical exposure needed to position students for success in two primary areas: 

• Graduate school. Pursue a master’s in speech-language pathology or audiology.
• Future employment. Work as a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA).

When students finish their master’s in the field, they can:

• Qualify to sit for the national examination (Praxis).
• Complete their clinical fellowship year (CFY) and obtain their Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP or CCC-A).
• Apply for state licensure.
