About John C Calhoun State Community College

In 1947, Calhoun Community College was founded as the result of the consolidation of the Tennessee Valley State Technical School and John C. Calhoun State Junior College. The stated mission of the college is to be “an institution of excellence providing quality, innovative instruction through a responsive learning environment while promoting cultural enrichment and community development.” Today, CCC is an open-admission, community-based, state-supported, coeducational, and comprehensive school serving approximately 10,000 students.

CCC offers more than 100 certificates and two-year associate’s degrees, which can be transferred into four-year degrees or directly into a career. Many courses are offered online, allowing students to earn degrees at least partly online. A few degrees and certificates can be earned completely online. CCC online degrees are offered in three formats: asynchronous, synchronous, and hy-flex. Hy-flex courses are unique in that they allow students to attend in person or online. Students participating in these programs have the opportunity to change their mode of attendance each week to better fit their schedules.

Tony’s Take

Calhoun is a practical, lower-cost way to start college. Cost is a real strength, with tuition around $131 per credit hour. Free tutoring and book or tool rental can help cut total expenses.

Professors are another plus. Classes are often smaller, so students get more direct support. Instructors explain lessons clearly and offer one-on-one help. Online classes are easy to use and flexible for busy schedules.

Class experience can vary by course. Reply times and course layout are not always the same. Even so, Calhoun is a strong fit for students who want affordable credits, transfer progress, and a steady path to finish coursework.
