Robert and Shirley Perry realized a gap existed for the training of Medical Assistants. Three students graduated from their first program founding San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) in 1977. Since that date, the private, for-profit junior college continues to provide students with an accelerated option in preparation for business, medical, and technical professions. SJVC operates nine campuses across California, in addition to an online campus and offers over 20 Certificate and Associate’s degree programs. More than 1,000 students are enrolled in the online division of the school with a student-faculty ratio of 34:1.
SJVC is regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the U.S. Department of Education.
SJVC Online provides students with the opportunity to pursue six different Associate’s degrees. Students can choose from four different Business degrees, including:
- Administrative Health Care Management
- Business Administration
- Construction Management
- Human Resource Administration
or two different Medical Associate’s degrees, including:
- Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting
- Clinical Medical Assisting
The accelerated learning platform at SJVC allows most students to complete their degree within fourteen months. Online classes are taught in both asynchronous and synchronous formats, giving students the flexibility to study independently or participate in live sessions. In addition, SJVC integrates hands-on applications with classroom instruction to facilitate learning. Thereby, upon completion of the degree, students are prepared to enter the workforce. For example, students graduating from the Administrative Health Care Management program are eligible to achieve national certification by passing the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) exam and also earn HIPAA, AHA-Adult & Infant CPR, and First Aid Certification. Students enrolled in the Construction Management program gain knowledge in topics like architectural design theory and industry laws and regulations in order to prepare for futures as project or construction managers.
Tuition rates vary among campuses and degree programs at SJVC. Tuition rates at SJVC Online range from $14,415 to $14,810 for Certificate programs and from $28,830 to $29,620 for Associate’s degrees. For instance, the cost for students to pursue a Certificate in Clinical Medical Assisting is $14,415 while the Associate’s degree in the same field of study costs $28,830. Likewise, a Certificate in Human Resource Administration is $14,810 while the Associate’s degree costs $29,620.
