With roots as a high school academy more than a century ago, Graceland University has built upon its core values of “learning,” “wholeness” and “community” to deliver a liberal arts education that is “enhanced by career-oriented practical experiences.” Today, the university leads the way with its renowned nursing program as well as its reputation for education, business, and seminary degrees. Sponsored by the Community of Christ Church, it has two main campuses in Lamoni, Iowa and Independence, Missouri. The online program is operated from the Independence campus. Nine hundred students participate in the online program from forty-two states and thirty-four countries.
Accredited by the most “stringent” organizations, Graceland is a member of the North Central Association and is approved by the Higher Learning Commission, the National Accreditation of Teacher Education and the nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education with full approval status from the Iowa Board of Nursing and the Missouri State Board of Nursing. In fact, “seventy-five percent of faculty hold the highest degree in their field.” Just as important, its own students highly approve of Graceland’s distance learning programs. Ninety-seven percent of the university’s Masters of Education alumni recommend the online instruction.
As a pioneer in online School of Nursing programs, Graceland has expanded its degrees giving students online choices of a RN to B.S.N. or B.A. degree, a Master’s of Science in Nursing, a Master of Education, or a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. The university also offers the opportunity for students to achieve Business degrees and a Master of Arts in Religion via online, or through a combination of campus and online courses. Classes are offered in various terms. For example the RN-BSN Online Nursing program administers fall, spring, and summer terms beginning the end of August, January, and end of May, respectively. Nursing students complete clinicals in their own communities while attending one focus session ( 2- 5 days) on the Independence campus. The online business degree operates in 8-week terms with six terms per year. Some students complete their business degree in as little as fifteen months. With flexibility in mind for the working individual, the university also provides 24/7 technical assistance to answer students' questions.
The university emphasizes the relevance and flexibility of course content as it applies to real world situations and Graceland also strives to keep tuition affordable. Tuition rates vary according to each school. The costs of an online Master’s of Education begins at $450 per semester hour with additional fees. The distance learning School of Nursing tuition begins at $425 per semester hour for undergraduates and $625 per semester hour for graduate level students with additional fees incurred. The Seminary program begins at $240 per semester hour with added technological fees while the Business degree begins at $295 per semester hour. Federal and state loans and grants are available for undergraduate students while graduate students may be approved for federal loans.
