The United States Sports Academy, located in Daphne, Alabama, is a non-profit, independent, sport-specific institute that was founded in 1972. The Academy was established after the United States Olympic team performed poorly in the 1972 Olympics, as a result of the athletes lacking quality training and coaching. The programs offered by the United States Sports Academy were an education resource that provided research, instruction and service that were needed to upgrade coaching.
The Academy is the world’s largest sports university and serves the country, and the world, with research, instruction and service programs and prepares students for careers in sports. Faculty members have professional sports experience and academic backgrounds and provide instruction that is sports focused. Graduates of the Academy have become teachers, managers, coaches, researchers and healthcare providers in the area of sports at the recreational collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. In 1984, the American Sport Art Museum and Archives was founded on the academy’s campus and houses a collection of over 1,000 pieces of sport art created by well-known artists from around the world.
The United States Sports Academy is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and students attending the United States Sports Academy can earn bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. The Academy also offers certificate programs. The types of degrees offered by the Academy include Bachelor of Sports Science (B.S.S.), Master of Sports Science (M.S.S.), and Doctor of Education in Sports Management (Ed.D). The Bachelor of Sports Science programs is offered in the major areas of sports coaching, sports management, sports strength and conditioning, and sports studies, and is designed to accommodate the needs of rising sports professionals. The Master of Sports Science program at the Academy is a 33 semester-hour program. Students can major in sports health, and fitness, sports coaching, sports studies and sports management. Students have the option of combining two majors to receive a dual major, which will require 42 to 45 semester hours. The emphasis areas for the M.S.S. degree are NCAA compliance, personal training, Olympism, sports hospitality management, sports psychology and recreation management. The Doctor of Education in Sports Management is a 66 semester hour program, and is approved by the Sport Management Program Review Council. The Sport Management Program Review Council is a combined program between the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the North American Society of Sport Management. Graduates of the doctoral program have gone into careers as athletic directors, private sport entrepreneurs and college professors. The Academy has a continuing education department that offers online courses, certification programs, certificate programs and professional CEU credits.
The Academy’s Distance Learning Program offers a flexible schedule that allows students to complete courses online at any time and from any location. All of the Academy’s courses are available online. Classes are accessed through the course management system, and students have 24 hour access to the CMS and can submit assignments, take tests and quizzes, interact with students and professors, and take part in discussions at any time. Students have access to online writing tutorials and an online reference database system through the Academy library that are both available to assist them with research.
The Academy is a G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School, and is a member of the Service members Consortium Opportunity Colleges, and offers assistance to military members wishing to pursue an education. Classes are offered on a rolling semester system, which allows military members to enroll in and attend classes at their convenience. Tuition for the Academy’s B.S.S. program is $330 per credit hour, and the cost for military members is $250 per credit hour. The M.S.S. program cost is $540 per credit hour, and the Ed.D. program cost is $655 per credit hour. Financial aid is available to qualified students.
