Palm Beach Atlantic University was founded in 1968 by Dr. Jess C. Moody while he was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach. As a private, not for profit, institution of higher education, Palm Beach Atlantic University awards Associate's degrees, Bachelor's degrees, Master's degrees and Doctor's degrees. The University's mission is to “prepare students for lifelong learning and leadership by offering excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study in the Arts, Humanities, Sciences and selected professions.” This mission is met through steady values on the pursuit of accountability, excellence, integrity, love, respect and unity. Palm Beach Atlantic University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Potential students wanting to apply to Palm Beach Atlantic University can do so through an online application that needs to be sent in with a non-refundable fee of $30. In the fall of 2011, there were 1,373 applicants, 83% of which were accepted. Of the students who were accepted, 42% of them decided to enroll at Palm Beach Atlantic University and those students who decided to attend Palm Beach Atlantic University chose to come back for a second year at a rate of 72% for full time students and 100% for part time students. Of students who are enrolled full time, 46% graduated within the standard four years it is expected to take to earn a bachelor’s degree and 58% graduated within six years.
There are a total of 3,579 students who currently go to Palm Beach Atlantic University. Of these students, 2,836 are undergraduate students, 340 of which are transfer students, and 828 are graduate students. A slight majority of students who come to Palm Beach Atlantic University come from within the state of Florida, with 58% in state students, 40% out of state students and 2% international students. The majority of undergraduate students take at least 12 credit hours per semester with 78% full time undergraduate students and 22% part time undergraduate students. Graduate students also are mostly enrolled full time with 72% full time graduate enrollments and 287% part time graduate enrollment. The student body is comprised of 62% female students and 38% male students. There is no strong sense of diversity with 54% of students being white and only 14%, 2% and 10% representing African American, Asian and Hispanic students respectively. There are 1,560 students that are over the age of 24 and considered to be adult learners.
There are nine academic schools that make up the variety of programs available to Palm Beach Atlantic University students. Within these schools, there are over 60 majors for students to choose from that lead to a variety of 12 degrees ranging from the Associate’s level up to the Doctoral level. For students who are unable to attend in-class learning sessions, Palm Beach Atlantic University offers select online class options. Online classes are available to students who have previously been enrolled in normal day time courses and students who are enrolled in the Daytime courses, or who are enrolled in the MacArthur School of Leadership or the Bachelors in Administration of Ministry program. There are 3,579 faculty members at Palm Beach Atlantic University, all of which are part of the instructional faculty. These faculty members are exdiverts in their fields and 81% hold their highest degree in their field. Class sizes are kept relatively small due to a 13:1 student to faculty ratio. The average class consists of 17 students and 93% of undergraduate classes that have fewer than 30 students.
When not in class students at Palm Beach Atlantic University have a variety of options for on campus involvement. There are diverse club offerings with over 60 active student organizations. Student organizations at Palm Beach Atlantic University are designed to provide effective learning environments for students that will teach leadership, cohesiveness and personal integrity. The types of available student organizations include social, professional , and religious clubs and intermural sports. In addition to student clubs, there are also 10 men’s and woman’s sports teams that compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, division II.
Tuition comes to $24,100 per academic year for both in and out of state students. To help students meet the cost of tuition, there is an on campus financial aid office that can provide information for tuition payment plans, prepaid tuition plans and can help student’s acquire scholarships, loans and grants. Currently, 81% of undergraduate students receive either grant or scholarship aid with the average amount awarded coming to about $11,339. In addition to those who receive grant or scholarship aid, 59% of students also receive federal student loans with an average amount of $9,168.
