In 1941, National American University (NAU) opened in South Dakota in order to serve students desiring “specialized business training.” Realizing a need for a larger facility to serve the increased demand for business programs for returning veterans at the end of the Korean War, the University continued growing. In recent years, NAU expanded again with its formation of online courses in 1996. Today, National American University, a for-profit university, offers online Diploma, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees with more than forty different degree options. In addition, the University partners with other institutions in the Associate to Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program (the 2+2 degree completion program) to ensure that once students complete an Associate’s degree, NAU will facilitate the earning of their Bachelor’s degree.
National American University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, it enjoys multiple accreditations and approvals for degree/campus location specific programs.

In addition, the School promotes an “inverted curriculum” that allows you to initially complete coursework in your desired major. Therefore, you can quickly assess decisions about individual career goals and choices in order to more efficiently complete your studies. Furthermore, students complete a career management program before graduating to assist with the development of resumes, prepare for job interviews, network, and find employment. Prospective students must complete a Student Application for Admission, hold a valid high school diploma or U.S. Department of Education recognized degree equivalent, and submit official transcripts in order to apply.
NAU supports grants, scholarships, work-study and government loan programs at the local, state and federal levels to ensure affordability for students. Students may also want to check with their employer to determine if they qualify for company tuition assistance. NAU suggests that interested students contact the admissions office for specifics regarding tuition rates.
NAU acknowledges the sacrifices of the military by offering affordable options and by supporting federal benefit programs. Additionally, there no instructional or technology fees are assessed. The University supports the MTA, GI Bill, the Post 9/11 Bill, Top Up, spouse tuition programs and more. NAU also partners with the USAF Air University, DANTES, and the Yellow Ribbon Program, along with membership in the SOC and approval by the Veterans Administration to facilitate the education of military personnel.
